The History of the Scooter is much longer than most would think with the first scooter
Like motorcycles appearing as early as 1894. Scooters have gone through a long succession of design changes but the basic premise has remained the same for those early days to provide the rider with a comfortable and economical ride generally with the idea of short computes in mind.
The modern day scooter as we know it can be attributed to the post war Italian designs of the Piaggio Vespa and the revolutionary 1947 D’Ascanio which had many of the modern day features we would associate with a motorised Scooter such as small wheels, footplates, single arm front fork and encased engine mounted under the seat at the back. The scooter has changed many times since its early days but the basic design can still be seen in those early post war models. Japan as well as Italy is also a major manufacturer of Scooters with Honda and Yamaha amongst the big players
Scooters are generally amongst the most economical forms of transport and loved the world over as a simple way to get around in style. Try any street in mainland Europe or any city in Far East Asia and the States and all will buzz to the familiar high-pitched sound of commuters’ scooters.
However when looking for the Cheapest Scooter Insurance take your time as cheap is not always best you will of course be looking for the best price but should also want the comfort of knowing should the unfortunate need arise that you Insurer will pay quickly and efficiently with least amount of fuss for that reason it is worth taking your time and searching out the exact deal that best suits your needs. Scooters, also known as mopeds, are becoming an increasing mode of transportation. They are economical for people living in densely populated communities, university and college students. In some parts of the world, like in Asian communities, scooters are used more than cars. Scooters consume little fuel, if any, take up literally very little space, and are inexpensive to insure. And insuring your scooter is what this article is about.
Scooters Are Motor Vehicles
Although scooters and mopeds are perhaps the smaller of the two wheeled vehicles, with the exception of the bicycle, they are still considered to be motor vehicles because they operate from some form of power train, be it gas or electric motors. Because they are powered by a motor many communities want them insured when they are traveling about on their public roads.
What Coverage Is Needed?
The most basic coverage, for any vehicle, is third party insurance. If your scooter hits someone and causes injury to that person your third party insurance will pay the medical bills for that person. If you run into something and damage it, your third party insurance will pay for the damage your scooter did.
Fully comprehensive insurance is another type of vehicle coverage. This coverage not only pays for everything that the third party insurance pays for damage done to you and/or your scooter. If you ride a scooter in a highly populated area it may be a good idea to have this type of coverage for your protection should another vehicle not see you and hit you. This coverage can also pay if your scooter is stolen, for example. Or if for some reason your scooter catches on fire the insurance company will pay for the damage done and, in some instances, pay for the purchase of another scooter.
In between these two levels of coverage is third party, fire and theft insurance. This is fairly self-explanatory in what it covers.
Third party,, third party, fire and theft and comprehensive coverage are basic and separate vehicle policies. Now let’s look at what you might need to purchase these policies.
Driving Record
South African law requires the operator of a scooter or moped to be licensed to operate it, and they have minimum age requirements. You need to be eighteen for a full driver’s license and seventeen to get a learners permit.
Mileage
The insurance company may need to know how much your scooter will be on the road. The way they get an idea of this is to ask you how much you plan on driving around on your scooter. The amount you tell them can affect how much you pay.
Security
If you are considering buying a comprehensive policy the insurance company will nearly insist that you purchase an approved locking device to keep your scooter secured whenever you are not riding it. The insurance company can actually make this request before insuring you if they want to. Their thinking is that if your scooter is appropriately secured there is less chance of it being stolen. If you scooter is stolen and was not properly secured you will have a very difficult time getting the insurance to pay for it.
Shopping For Scooter Insurance Coverage
There are many automobile and motorcycle insurance companies to choose from in South Africa today, but not all will insure scooters or mopeds. Honestly speaking, it is not very lucrative for them to do so. The money they make from such coverage is minimal at best. But there are some insurance companies out there that would like to provide insurance coverage for your scooter.
After finding a few insurance companies that do insure scooters and mopeds call each one and get a quote from them. You should find that coverage for a scooter is relatively inexpensive and affordable.
If you have recently bought a new Scooter or Used Scooter then you will realise the necessity for a decent scooter insurance policy. Scooters by design are considered an urbane form of transport and are widely used for commuting; they are An attractive and economical choice of transport especially in these Times of rising oil prices.
Where the cost of petrol seems to rise daily. Scooters were designed from the outset with the commuter in mind, offering a more comfortable alternative to the traditional motorcycle.
The Scooter has smaller wheels and a foot well allowing the rider to sit with his or her feet facing forward and not requiring the rider to fully straddle the seat as with a conventional motorcycle. This design makes scooters ideal for city commutes by riders requiring to wear smart dress.
Scooters have changed little in style since their early development days when the design incorporated most of the features we can still see and associate with the modern motor scooter.
Scooter Insurance as with all other forms of automotive insurance are a legal requirement and can be quite costly depending on previous scooter insurance history the age and experience of the scooter rider and other factors such as previous claims history and geographic location, for instance it can be more expensive to insure a scooter depending on the area in which you live.
If an area has a higher than usual rate of claims, accidents or crime then this can effect the cost of your scooter insurance cover.

If your looking now for scooter insurance and your keen to find the cheapest scooter insurance
Ok guys; this tip is super top secret and will help you get dirt cheap scooter insurance. Are you ready for this little secret; it’s going to blow your mind when you hear it.
Winter is your friend. Think about it - less and less people are looking for scooter insurance over winter and so you have more and more power to negotiate a better rate for yourself. If you live somewhere in the United Kingdom where it snows over the winter it’s even better because some people are just declaring their scooter as SAWN and so don’t have to pay the high cost of insurance.
Just because you are renewing your policy over winter doesn’t mean you are getting a cheaper rate for just the winter months; it means that you are grabbing this (sometimes) HUGE saving for the whole year. See, it is so simple that nobody ever thinks about it.
The same applies to motorcycle insurance; take advantage of winter and push for a better deal.
Sadly this doesn’t work when you are renewing your car insurance; because you use your car over winter and summer and there is no risk of skidding, slipping or getting soaked then they constantly keep the prices the same regardless of seasonality.
Ok so what is the saving for keeping your scooter off the road versus getting cheap winter insurance?

Well guys I am not going to lie to you; the savings can be big but not that big. However if you get a nice dry winters day and you fancy nipping to the shops over winter obviously if you have kept it on the road and insured then you can but if it has been declared as off the road you can’t!
See I told you this tip was way obvious right at the start of this little article so now you just need to price the cost of winter insurance deals against taking your scooter off the road for a winter. However if you live in the City or use your scooter every day, my tip could save you a fortune!
Personally I nearly always keep my scooter insured year round and I always hunt for cheap scooter insurance over winter.

So you just go to one website and as they as so keen on saying they do all the hard work.
Other webtools that you can use to lock in cheap motor scooter insurance are to use cashback or moneyback websites where you get cashback for buying through their system. This is a great way to shop and can save you £100 when tied in with your breakdown cover policy.

In the UK you can ride a scooter at the age of 16 and as such the UK has some of the best cheap scooter insurance for teens. In this article we will take a look at how to get the best policy for your teen when you are insuring their first scooter.
Now the first problem that you will encounter when shopping for insurance for your teen is their age; just like car insurance teenagers face high insurance premiums for the first few years; however unlike car insurance for teenagers the magic age where their premium drops isn’t 25 - it’s usually 20.
The best way to approach scooter insruance for teenagers is to accept that they are going to pay a high premium in the first few years and talk to them about the things that they can do to lower their premium.
Speed - Speed doesn’t just kill; speeding also results in points and fines which has a knock on effect of pushing your insurance premium up and remember it stays on your record for 3 years. People often fall into the trap of thinking that because a scooter is only 50cc then they are never going to get caught speeding; big mistake. A scooter that tops out at 40mph can still do 40mph through a 30mph zone.
Danger - Claims mean higher policy prices, so it’s worth talking to you teenager about remembering to keep safe and always check. At 16 some teens still have the mentality of a child and allowing them a scooter is a big step towards growing up and with this big step comes big responsibility. If you and your teen want cheap scooter insurance for life then it’s really worth hammering home the amount of responsibility that they have with a scooter.
Safe - Scooters like motorbikes are easier to steal than cars so it’s worth buying a reputable chain to keep it locked up when they are out on it and it’s worth buying a ground anchor to secure it when they have it at home.
Again like cars to get cheap scooter insurance for teens it’s best to be sensible and keep the scooter safe.
I love when I can bring you guys some good news and now I can; recent figures have shown that scooter insurance uk is coming down in price all the time.
Scooter Insurance in the UK is at an all time low and as fuel is going up in price now is a great time to buy a scooter and insure it.
With the cost of petrol at an all time high and scooter insurance at an all time low; it really does make sense to buy a scooter, grab some cheap scooter insurance and start enjoying motoring again.
Ok so we have guided you on how to find cheap scooter insurance and now it’s time to take a plunge into finding you dear reader cheap moped insurance.
First we need to understand why scooter insurance costs more than moped insurance and to do this we need to take a good long look at scooters and mopeds to outline a few key differences.
In fact, there are more similarities between motorcycles and scooters than there are between mopeds and scooters. But those differences are not why the one model of motor scooter has been listed as a moped. There is a reason it has been listed as a moped despite it not being a moped, and we’ll explain why a little later. But first we’ll explain the differences between mopeds and scooters.
Scooters actually have more in common with motorcycles that mopeds. The first clue as to their differences comes from the name ‘moped’.
The word moped comes from words - ‘motor’ and ‘pedal’. So a moped is a motorised two wheeled vehicle with pedals. See now we are getting somewhere. Now mopeds in the UK are restricted to under 50cc so obviously aren’t very quick which is why the cost to insure is so low. However they are restricted in speed so don’t go expecting to set the streets on fire on a moped.
Mopeds seem to be a favourite mode of transpot in Asia and anyone who has been will know the difference straight away.
I decided to put this guide together after I received the second email asking about how to make a scooter insurance claim. So here it is; and while this in no way constitutes legal advice, I hope it covers the major points about scooter insurance claims.
Sadly accidents happen and while being involved can be a traumatic experience; it’s important that you know what has to be done should you have to make a claim on your policy.
First things first – if there has been damage to another vehicle or somebody is injured you must stop. Failing to stop at the scene of an accident is against the law and you the police take a hard line on this as in a lot of cases; those who fail to stop tend to be breaking other laws (drink/drug driving), no scooter insurance or no licence. Even if you aren’t at fault you must stop. I can’t stress this enough.
Secondly never admit blame or offer to pay for any damages. If the other motorist admits blame you must inform you insurance company.
Next you should exchange details of your scooter insurance company, again don’t offer to pay out of your own pocket because this is another rule that is law. Please not that if you are hit by an uninsured driver and are fully comprehensive; chances are you won’t lose your no claims bonus or have to pay any excess.
Lastly before leaving the scene you should take down the details of as many people who witnessed the accident as possible on top of anyone who was involved in the crash.
When you call your insurance company you should try to provide them with as much information as possible including any other persons who witnessed the collision. Try not to worry as the claims handlers deal with scooter insurance claims every day and will be able to guide you painlessly through everything. The best advice I can give you is to grab a warm drink and relax.
Once you claim is logged you can just sit back and leave everything to your insurance company.
Depending on your scooter insurance company they may collect your damaged vehicle, fix it and valet it.
If your scooter is a total write off then you will be contacted by a scooter insurance claims value manager and they will assess how much your scooter is worth and how much payout you will receive.
